
William B. McKean, MD, PhD
Clinical Investigator
Dr. McKean is a Clinical Investigator at START Mountain Region in Salt Lake City, Utah. He began his graduate work at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program. There he earned both an M.D. and a Ph.D., with his thesis in lipid metabolism through the Department of Molecular Genetics. Returning to Utah, he joined the Physician Scientist Training Program, completing an Internal Medicine residency and a Medical Oncology fellowship at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). During his fellowship, he served as the Chief Fellow and was accepted to the American Association of Cancer Research’s Medical Biology in Clinical Oncology Workshop. Furthering his medical training, Dr. McKean completed a second fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at the HCI. Throughout his fellowships, he conducted postdoctoral research in the Rutter lab and University of Utah Biochemistry Department. He investigated neural stem cell and brain cancer metabolism, earning the Quagliana Award for his research contributions.
